解 説

|
体長4 mm。触角や脚が著しく長く，胸部も細長いアリである。体色は黄色で腹部は多少とも褐色がかる。頭部は卵型，頭盾は前に突出し前縁は弧をえがく。複眼は発達しやや突出する。大あごは8歯を持つ。触角は11節からなり，触角柄節の長さは頭長の2倍を越える。第2節から11節は各節ともに長さは幅の3倍以上。前胸は細長くあまり隆起しない。中胸から前伸腹節前部の背縁は緩やかにへこむ。前伸腹節背縁は側方から見て弧をえがく。腹柄節は前後に厚い逆Ｕ字型。頭部，腹部には立毛が見られるが，胸部背縁には立毛がない。
石下や土中に営巣し，沖縄では働きアリが林縁や草地，あるいは路傍に普通にみられ，樹上も徘徊している。本種は熱帯アフリカ (Wilson & Taylor, 1967) か熱帯アジア (Kempf, 1972) に本来分布していたものが，人類の交易の発達に伴い熱帯や亜熱帯を中心に世界中に分布を広げたとされる。熱帯作物の害虫として知られ，本種が作物の害虫であるアブラムシやカイガラムシを保護することによって，二次的に被害を及ぼしていると言われている (Reimer et al. ,1990 など)。
