2. DirectionThe direction toward the head is called anterior, and the opposite direction is called posterior. On the head itself, the mandibular direction is called anterior, and the opposite direction is called posterior. The vertical dimension is expressed using "dorsal" and "ventral", instead of using "upward" and "downward". The plane of the back is called the dorsal plane, and the plane of the abdomen is called the ventral plane. Concerning the appendages such as the mandibles, antennae and legs, the direction towards their point of joining the body or head is called "basal" and the opposite direction is called "terminal (tip)".
