Copyrights and Regulations on Use of "Ant Image Database (Japan)"

This Database, which has the goal of contributing to scientific research and to the diffusion of education with the latest knowledge on the classification of ants, consists principally of high-grade images compiled by the Japanese Ant Database Group (JADG), and can be used on the Internet and CD-ROM.

Other than images photographed by researchers, this Database contains picture images taken by professional photographers, as well as photograph images belonging to research institutes and museums, together with electronic publications of digital texts, scientific books and illustrated encyclopedias. These images and works are protected by copyrights including moral rights as well as intellectual property rights, specifically the neighboring rights of publication rights and editorial rights.

Prior to publishing this Database on the Internet, we have obtained permission from the owners of the intellectual property rights for the gratuitous disclosure with the objective of "scientific purposes and educational diffusion purposes". Nevertheless, the information disclosed on the Internet have been used in various forms unpredicted in the initial stage such as for commercial purposes, at times leading to serious problems associated with the infringement of copyrights. In order to prevent confusion regarding copyrights in advance, the regulations on the use of this Database on the Internet and CD-ROM are stipulated as follows:

  1. The use of this Database will be free if it is for nonprofit purposes, such as scientific research, diffusion of education and news reports. However, it is to be noted that the user is requested to obtain permission from the copyright owners in advance, and any use of the Database must be clearly accompanied by the names of the copyright owners or the sources following the examples set hereunder:

    Moreover, if the user wishes to link up for the aforementioned ends, the user is requested to contact the Japanese Ant Database Group (JADG) in advance to obtain permission.

  3. A charge will be applied for the use of this Database in cases of commercial purposes as well as scientific and educational purposes that are undertaken for profit. The user is requested to contact either the corresponding copyright owner listed below or the Japanese Ant Database Group (JADG) to obtain prior permission for use as well as to find out the fees charged and the method of payment. Furthermore, any use of the Database must be clearly accompanied by the names of the copyright owners or the database sources in accordance with the abovementioned use for scientific and educational purposes.

  4. Ownership of copyrights and how to contact copyright owners:
    Inquiries concerning this Database, including inquiries concerning the use of digital publications as described hereunder, should be addressed to Japanese Ant Database Group (JADG), upon which the JADG will provide the appropriate directions.

    1. The copyrights of this Database and texts, with the exception of the digital publications listed below, belong to the Japanese Ant Database Group (JADG). If the user wishes to use images and texts for commercial purposes, the user is requested to pay a fixed amount to IDENGAKU-FUKYUKAI as "financial support for the activities of the Database".
