体長5〜10 mm程度の中〜大型のアリ。複眼は発達し，単眼は欠失する。触角は12節からなる。触角挿入孔は頭盾後縁から離れた場所にある。PFは6，4。前胸，前伸腹節，腹柄節のいずれか１か所以上の部位に刺状あるいは歯状の突起を持つ。腹部第１節は大きく腹部全体の1/2以上の大きさを占める。腹部末端の開口部に周毛はない。
本属は種によって土中から樹上までの様々な場所に営巣する。樹上生活種では，植物体を用いたカ−トン製の巣や葉を糸で紡いだ巣を作るものも見られる。南北アメリカを除く熱帯，亜熱帯を中心に約 480種が記載されており，それらは14亜属 (Hung, 1967; Bolton, 1973) に区分されるが，亜属間の区分が不明瞭なものも含まれている。 PolyrhachisよりもMyrmaの方が創設年代は古いが，ICZNによってPolyrhachisの属名の使用が指示されている。熱帯・亜熱帯アフリカ産のものに関しては Bolton (1973) の総説があり42種にまとめられた。オーストラリア産については Kohout & Taylor (1990)が114種に整理している。アジアにおいても，一部の種群についてはまとめられている (Bolton, 1975; Hung, 1970; Kohout, 1988, 1990) が，まだ多くの種は未整理で分類は混乱した状態にある。日本ではトゲアリ亜属 (Polyrhachis s.str.)，ヘリトゲアリ亜属 (Myrma)，マルトゲアリ亜属 (Myrmhopla) の3亜属に4種が知られている。
