解 説
|
|
体長4.5〜7 mm。頭部，胸部，腹柄節，脚などは黄赤褐色。ただし頭部，胸部，脚の上面はやや暗色。腹部は黒色だが，基部は少し赤みがかる。ケズネアカヤマアリによく似るが，後脚脛節外面や触角柄節には立毛はほとんどないことから区別される。腹柄節上縁中央部はやや凸状かほとんど平ら。
比較的明るいところに単独で営巣し，枯れ草や針葉樹の落ち葉でつくられた塚は直径1メートルほどにもなる。石狩湾沿いには45000巣からなる巨大コロニーが形成されており，巣分かれで殖えていったものと考えられている (Higashi & Yamauchi, 1979)。単独で営巣している場合もあるが，雌アリは働きアリにくらべてそれほど大きくないので，ツノアカヤマアリのように，クロヤマアリ類に一時的寄生をする可能性がある。羽アリの飛出は8月 (Ito & Imamura, 1974)。本種の生態についてはいろいろと調べられている (Higashi, 1974, 1978a, 1978b;Imamura, 1974, 1978, 1982)。
本州での南限は神奈川県金時山 (近藤, 1961)。
