Ant maiting

Mating ceremony in the sky

The Camponotus japonicus ant mates around May 20. When the weather is hot and humid after rain and there is almost no wind, these ants fly into the sky for maiting. The Camponotus japonicus is the earliest ant species to make the mating flight at the end of April and the Crematogaster osakensis mates in September.
