Description

Mandibles perhaps the mot bizarre known in the Formicidae; each down-curved, with a large vertical lamella forming a strongly convex dorsal outline in profile; apex pointed; outer surface with longitudinal groove; inner face with several peg-like setae. Labrum with spiniform teeth. Clypeus trapezoid, raised and marginate. Antennal insertions exposed. Antennae 12-segmented; scape reaching posterior margin of head; funiculus not forming a club. Eyes absent. Promesonotal area not raised, without complete suture. Metanotal groove distinct. Propodeum without teeth; spiracle situated somewhat low on propodeum. Petiole without peduncle. In worker, postpetiole well separated from petiole and gaster by a strong constriction. In female, sternite of postpetiole fused with petiole, forming a single plate. Sting more or less developed.

Remarks

Although authorship of genus Anomalomyrma and tribe Anomalomyrmini were attributed to Taylor in Bolton (1990), the type species, Anomalomyrma taylori, was described by Bolton. The relevant descriptions were based on a single dealate female from Sabah, Malaysia. The Japanese species has not yet been formally described (Taylor, pers. comm.).
