Description
|
|
Total length of workers around 2 - 16 mm. Worker caste strongly polymorphic. Antennae 11-segmented, the apical 2 segments forming a club. Mandibles each with 5 or 6 teeth. Eyes relatively small. Palpal formula 2:2. Pro- and mesonotal dorsa of minor workers convex; metanotal groove distinct; propodeum with spines. Subpetiolar process absent. External morphology of largest major workers somewhat similar to that of reproductive females (queens) - ocelli, promesonotal suture, axilla, and metanotum present. Masticatory margin of mandibles obscurely dentate, teeth often lacking in largest workers. A small subpetiolar process often present.

Remarks
|
|
Pheidologeton comprises around 45 described species, and is distributed in the tropics from Africa to Southeast Asia and Australia. It is represented by a single species in Japan, Pheidologeton diversus (Jerdon), from the Ogasawara and the Nansei Islands.
